The application include woven asbestos impregnated with pumps and valves, cup and cone packings of solid. The excellent performance of these packings led of the expansion of their use beyond process systems to include steam and water lines. Some, steam distribution lines have been converted to packings of asbestos impregnated PTFE, ptfe packings, pump and valve packing.

In conventional packings, the grease, graphite or oil impregnants are washed out leaving the packings dry.

Seats, seals, diaphragms and other components of PTFE make valves virtually maintenance free valves operate longer with much less turning resistance. The rapid growth of the ball valves has, in large part resulted from the low friction, chemical resistance, and high and low temperature resistance of seats of PTFE. Similarly, gate, plug, and butterfly valves performs better with seals of PTFE. The recent development of butterfly valves and ball completely lined with PTFE provided freedom from valve maintenance under a wide variety of corrosive conditions.

Gaskets made with PTFE provide reliable sealing under the most extreme corrosive conditions. Reinforced and unreinforced constructions are available for piping, towers, heat exchangers and similar equipment that requires a fairly rigid material. While each property of PTFE is itself desirable, their combination makes PTFE a truly unique engineering for solving almost any corrosion problem. The versatility of PTFE resins illustrated by their use in piston rings, rod packings, mechanical seals, lip seals, O-rings and X-rings, sleeve bearings, roller bearing components, bearing pads, rasching rings, demisters, spargers, dip pipes filters lubricants and heater cable. The above stated items of PTFE are doing their job successfully year after year no other material can do quite as well.

Pumps are key units in fluid handling systems, and they are usually the units most susceptible to corrosion leading to process shutdown. PTFE resins have long been used in pumps for bearings, bushings, impellers, mechanical seals and shaft packings, Even water pump on condensate return lines stop failing from shaft wear and require minimum packing leakage when packed with asbestos impregnated with PTFE, now, all pump corrosion can be eliminated with the new hign-capacity centrifugal and aspirator pump made entirely with PTFE. The centrifugal pumps are becoming standard for such applications as circulation pickling acids in steels mills.

Perhaps the most unique property of PTFE resins is their anti-stick nature. Without surace treatment for bonding, nothing will adhere to them with any appreciable strength .This ha led to countless surface release applications in the chemical and process industries. Release space PTFE may be obtained by bonding cementable tape or equipment, enamel coating, applications of pressure-sensative tape to impregnated glass cloth, and fluidized bed coating.
